We haven’t had awful winter here in Hampton Roads…yet. But the days are short. I might have been a farmer in a previous life. I’m ready to go to bed when the sun goes down. That’s why I’m looking forward to the second annual Norfolk Theatre Festival!
It comes at a perfect time of the year. My husband calls it the dead zone for sports. I call it SAD: Seasonal Affective Disorder. No holidays, not enough sun, not enough outside activities, just blah.
Turns out that Norfolk is one of the most theatre-rich cities in Virginia. There is a thriving community of performing artists, talented theatre companies, a stellar local university theatre program and a “nurturing environment for new works.” All of these talented people are working and rehearsing right now to bring Hampton Roads some drama, comedy, inspiration, classics and the “eerie and ethereal” for Norfolk Theatre Festival.
There is so much to choose from. It’s time to start planning for the first week in March. Here's what's coming:
The Play That Goes Wrong(click for more info)
Part of the Broadway in Norfolk Series, this show will be at Chrysler Hall from March 3rd through March 8th. This was a “smash comedy” on Broadway and in London. “What would happen if Sherlock Holmes and Monty Python had an illegitimate Broadway baby?” That’s "The Play That Goes Wrong."
The Legend of Georgia McBride(click for more info)
Presented by Virginia Stage Company this show will be at the Wells Theatre from March 4th through March 8th. This Off-Broadway play is part comedy and part drama. It follows the journey of Casey: A young Elvis impersonator with a pregnant wife who makes a desperate choice to become a drag queen in order to pay his bills.
The Amen Corner(click for more info)
The Amen Corner presented by Norfolk State University Theatre Company at NSU’s Brown Hall Mainstage Theater from March 5 through March 8. James Baldwin’s “electric and moving” critically acclaimed Broadway hit musical drama will be performed by the award winning NSU Theatre Company.
The Yellow Wallpaper(click for more info)
The Yellow Wallpaper will be presented in the intimate Robin Hixon Theater by the Core Theatre Ensemble on March 5. The Yellow Wallpaper tells the story of a woman’s descent into madness while being confined to her room.
The Shield (click for more info)
The Shield will be presented by Virginia Wesleyan University at the Macon Brock Theatre on campus from March 5 through March 8. Directed by Dr. Travis Malone, Professor of Theatre, it is a story of the aftermath of war.
A Piece of My Heart(click for more info)
A Piece of My Heart will be presented by Little Theatre of Norfolk from March 6 through March 8 at Little Theatre of Norfolk.
Little Theatre of Norfolk has been a continually operating community theater since 1926. A Piece of My Heart is a drama of six women who served in Vietnam and their stories before, during and after the war.
The Comedy of Errors (click for more info)
One of Shakespeare's first plays will be presented by Generic Theater from March 4 through March 8 at Selden Market in Norfolk. This is Shakespeare’s classic comedy about two sets of identical twins, separated at birth.
There's a lot to choose from here with venues ranging from intimate to grand. The plays veer from eerie to farcical. To risk a cliché, there is something for everyone! Check them all out and pick a few for an otherwise dismal week in March. Call some friends, make some dinner reservations, get yourself out of the house, enjoy some indoor art and have fun.
Sounds like a staycation to me!
