Matthew Lorenz, with this solo project based out of Massachusetts, has somehow managed to locate swampland blues in the great white North. An inventive multi-instrumentalist, this man taps a wide range of oddball instruments to monstrous effect. There's a danger in tunnel-visioning this music as though it's some kind of novelty act by focusing on the fact that he's a one-man band. But this ain't no gimmicky bullshit, here. This is real. This is raw.
Lorenz is plenty capable of some deeply soulful indie-folk pop crooning, but where he really shines for me is when he kicks out the fuzz tone and let's it rip. His stage presence is certainly charming and full of wit, but underneath all of that lies a backbone of feverish voodoo. There's hazards lurking in deep waters here, well worth spending time to explore.
This show marks another combo between Jim Morrison and Josh Coplon, and their team-ups are increasingly a surefire sign that you're in for some thoughtful, provocative music. I look forward to seeing what they bring us next.
