The Do-Nothings album release party hosted by Toast was a predictably solid-to-good show. AND it was a stellar showcase in gritty persistence and DIY ethos.
Rain slowed me and I missed Plastic Nancy on the under-card. Party Wave indoctrinated me to the evening with their fast-paced garage rock sound. Serious working class, bluesy licks -- kept shiny and clean with some pop sensibilities. Looking forward to catching a full set from this two piece in the near future.
Fellow VA residents Stray Fossa had me swooning! Still reeling from a long drive and show last night in New Hampshire(!), they brought that dedication to the craft and showed it off with driving, beautifully-crafted songs. Reminiscent of Jets to Brazil or Jawbreaker with a delicate style that unfolds like a high school love note(give Sleeper Strip a listen). Vocalist had excellent range and tone that left you feeling melancholic and dreamy yet smiling warmly.
The warm smiles remained when psych rockers and local faves The Do-Nothings started their grin-n-groove set. I’ve seen them before here and there, opening for Ladada, the Lazy Dangers and others. Sure, they may look like their silverware drawer is filled exclusively with plastic takeout forks, chopsticks, and Micky Ds ketchup packets. Make no mistake; they are not their namesake. These guys WORK! It was a quick set but packed tight with music. They have a brick by brick approach to constructing their songs. What starts as bass groove soon paces up to J Mascis on an acid trip. Catch them when you can and definitely grab that new album.
