With a second ambitious year now behind it, the StarFire Festival is the brainchild of Michael Mahgerefteh -- bandleader of Norfolk's premier Space Rock group, Galaxy Dynamite, which won Veer awards for best Psychedelic / Jam band for three straight years.
In addition to Galaxy Dynamite, sets were performed throughout the day between three stages by Space Bacon, Tweed, Anthony Rosano and The Conqueroos, Lena & The Light, Mosquito Cabaret, Bad Weather Birds, The Fat Catz, Starcoast, The Muckrakes, Who We Are Not, the Russell Scarborough Trio, The Vailix, The School of Rock House Band, and Pain In The Yeahs -- who subbed in for another band at the last minute. The event was presented in cooperation with TNT Entertainment and O’Connor Brewing Company through partnerships with 96X, WHRO, Veer Magazine, VA Growler, 13News Now – WVEC, and tHRive to benefit the Hope House Foundation.
Intended as a celebration of music, arts, cosplay, comic books, and video game culture, the festival fused a traditional traditional music festival approach with contemporary comic conventions. The result? A wildly successful reinterpretation of the classic psychedelic fests of yore that raised money for a good cause and resulted in thousands of attendees.
When last seen, Mahgerefteh was already beginning plans for next years iteration. Long live Norfolk's King of Space Rock!
